Who may benefit?
Orthognathic treatment may be recommended for patients with significant jaw discrepancies that cannot be corrected with braces or clear aligners alone. It is most commonly suitable for adults who have finished growing and are looking for a long-term solution to functional or facial concerns.

Common reasons for treatment include:
-Difficulty chewing or biting due to jaw position/ size
-Severe overbite or underbite (deep bite / reverse bite)
-Facial asymmetry (one side of the jaw differs from the other)
-Open bite (when teeth do not meet)

Orthognathic surgery may improve both function and appearance, helping you achieve a healthier bite and a more balanced facial profile.

Please  note orthognathic treatment is an elective procedure, and all options will be explained. If you do not wish to have jaw surgery, other options may be presented to you.

The Orthognathic Surgery Process

At Synergy Orthodontics, we work closely with a leading experienced Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon to provide a coordinated approach to orthognathic surgery. Here’s what you can expect from the process:

  1. Initial Consultation and Assessment: We begin with a thorough evaluation to determine if orthognathic treatment is the right solution for you. This includes a detailed examination, and a discussion of your concerns and goals. You will also require x-rays, requested separately.
  2.  Surgical Planning: Our Consultant & Specialist Orthodontist, Dr. Paula Sinnott, will collaborate with a leading experienced Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon, who you also need to meet. The most suitable plan is agreed.
  3. Pre-Surgical Orthodontic Treatment: Before surgery, you will typically undergo orthodontic treatment (such as braces or aligners) to align your teeth in preparation for the surgical procedure. This can last between 9-30 months depending on your case.
  4. The Surgical Procedure: The surgery is performed in a hospital setting under general anaesthesia usually involving one night in hospital. Depending on the complexity of your case, the procedure may involve repositioning one or both jaws.
  5. Recovery and Aftercare: Recovery from orthognathic surgery usually involves taking some time off work or school. The surgeon will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and we schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress.
  6. Post-Surgical Orthodontic Treatment: After surgery, you will continue with orthodontic treatment to fine-tune your bite and ensure that your teeth are properly aligned. This phase typically lasts several months.

Orthognathic surgery involves the surgical repositioning of one or both of the jaws to correct misalignments/disproportion of the jaw and improve the overall function and aesthetics of the face and teeth. This type of surgery is often recommended for patients with significant jaw discrepancies that can affect their face, bite and symmetry.

All treatment is carefully planned using advanced diagnostics to achieve precise, predictable results.

Treatment with braces or clear aligners in preparation for jaw surgery typically ranges from €6,450–€8,500. We often provide aligners if preferred over braces for jaw surgery candidates as long as patients commit to wearing them 22 hours per day. We have many patients who travel from outside of Dublin and in order make this process easier – we use a Dental Monitoring system to allow us track you virtually every week, you will still need to attend the practice but less visits than what would be required otherwise.
