Expanders (Rapid Maxillary Expanders) in Dublin

During your child’s consultation, we will advise you on the most appropriate option based on their stage of dental development and need. Not everyone needs treatment and if there is a benefit we will inform you.

What may be recommended?

Palatal Expansion (Expanders)

A palatal expander is a fixed orthodontic appliance used to gently widen the upper jaw when it is narrow. Generally evidence shows that the most effective expansion is carried out on children between 8 to 10 years old.
Because children’s jaws are still growing, expansion at this age is safe, effective and well tolerated. Palatal expansion can help:

  • Correct crossbites (top teeth inside the bottom teeth)
  • Create space for adult teeth (if not enough space)
  • Eliminate displacement of the lower jaw (sliding off to one side)
  • Improve the bite and jaw
  • Early expansion can reduce the need for more complex treatment later on

Process: based off the scan taken in the mouth, we can arrange the fixed expander to be made and it take only a few minute to fit, your child is reviewed every week over 2-4 consecutive weeks and then the appliance left in the mouth for a few months for further review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Rapid Palatal Expander?
A rapid palatal expander is a custom-made orthodontic device used to gently widen the upper jaw (palate). It works by applying controlled pressure to gradually separate the two halves of the palate, creating more space for teeth to align properly. This treatment is most effective in children while the jaw is still developing.

Some adults may also require significant expansion if they have a narrow upper jaw -this is a different procedure called SARPE (Surgically Assisted Expansion), once growth is finished the main feasible method of this as an adult involves a special surgery.

Choosing a palatal expander in Dublin can provide several long-term benefits:

Creates space for crowded teeth
Improves bite alignment (crossbite correction)
May enhance jaw development and eliminate a displacement of the lower jaw
May reduce the need for tooth extractions

Early orthodontic treatment with expanders can simplify or shorten future orthodontic treatment.

You may benefit from a consultation with a Dublin orthodontist if your child has:

Crowded or overlapping teeth
A crossbite or narrow smile
Mouth breathing or snoring
Difficulty chewing properly
Early loss of baby teeth
